According to BC Stats, there were 287,400 jobs in health care and social assistance in 2015, making up 12.5% of BC’s workforce, making it one of BC’s biggest and fastest growing industries. Since 2005, health care has grown an incredible 35% – adding 74,600 jobs to BC’s economy.
According to WorkBC, the top BC health careers are:
- Registered Nurse
- Registered Nurse – Specialty Nursing
- Nurse Practitioner
- Physiotherapist
- Occupational Therapist
- Respiratory Therapist
- Ultrasonographer
- Medical Laboratory Technologist
- Licensed Practical Nurse
- Health Care Assistant/Care Aide
According to surveys of graduating students in BC conducted by BC Stats from 2013 to 2015, 93% of graduates from health care programs are employed compared to the BC average of 87% for all programs. Workers in this industry also earn higher wages – in April 2016, these employees earned approximately 17% more than the average worker in BC.
This industry is also resistant to changes in the economy. In 2013, the health care and social assistance industry had an unemployment rate of 2.2% compared to the overall provincial unemployment rate of 6.6%.
In April 2016, British Columbia had the lowest unemployment rate across the entire country according to Statistics Canada. This survey also observed a “strong upward trend” driven partly by the growing health care and social assistance industry.
With the provincial government announcing the creation of 1600 new positions for nurses across BC earlier this year, it is clear that the health care industry in BC is growing fast and the demand for workers is high.
