Are you thinking of making your next career move?

There are numerous reasons why changing jobs may be appealing. Whether you’re looking for a change of pace, new challenges, or a way to accelerate your career growth, here are the steps you need to take when applying for your next job.

Don’t just apply for every single job

Even if you’re not satisfied with your current role, it’s not a good idea to be papering resumes to every company that’s hiring. It’s important to consider why you’re applying for each job – will this be a position you’ll be happy in, or will you just be looking for yet another new role in a few months? Ask yourself what you’re looking for and then take the time to find something that’s a fit for you.

No generic applications

Sending out dozens of applications a week might leave you feeling productive when in fact, it’s probably counter-productive. It’s very apparent to recruiters and HR professionals when you’re sending out generic resumes and it’s no way to stand out. Make sure you’re doing your research to find out what employers are looking for in employees and what the role entails.

Think about your cover letter

The topic of cover letters is a tricky one. Depending on who you’re asking, they can be thought of as a thing of the past, or a lack of a cover letter may indicate a lack of interest (or effort). When in doubt, it’s best to include one because even if the recruiter doesn’t read it when first going over your application, the hiring manager may want to see it later on in the process.

Don’t leave it at the application

For in-demand jobs with top companies, it’s likely you’ll be competing with a stack of other qualified applicants. To help you stick out, try to find a way to follow up on your application. This could be online (via email or LinkedIn) or even in person (if you end up at a networking event with the recruiter). Following up can show initiative, but it’s important to not be pushy either, and remember that recruiters and hiring managers may have dozens (if not hundreds) of applications to go through.
